Josephine Baker Collection
World-Renowned Performer & Trendsetter
This month’s Featured Female Empowerment Muse (FFEM) was one of the most successful African American performers in French history (but that’s not all). She flourished as a dancer, was a civil rights activist, and wait for it…a World War 2 Spy. A round of applause for the remarkable Josephine Baker!
Josephine’s legacy was vast, unconventional, and impactful. We could write a full-on musical on her life, but here are some of the highlights. She was the highest paid chorus girl in Vaudeville, a Sublieutenant in the French resistance in World War II, mom to 12 adopted children from different races (and she raised them in a castle), and the only female speaker at the March on Washington. Josephine Baker fought for racial injustice and was a force like nothing the world had seen. We appreciate the audacity in Josephine to live untamed, unfiltered, and on her own terms. #Icon
